Kingston top of the league after beating Brunel

by Lars Thomesen

Kingston 1st   6

Brunel 4th      1

Matt Hammett created four of the goals to spearhead Kingston men’s first XI to a 6-1 victory against Brunel at Tolworth.

The win lifted KU above their visitors to the top of South Eastern League 4C and enhanced their already healthy goal difference.

The mercurial Hammett was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side. He tormented Brunel’s defence and twice put Gareth Chendlik clean through, with Kofi Wiredu and Yaniek Monrose the others to benefit from the impeccable service.

Two goals by Hassan Al-Haddad added to the tally, handing Kingston their second biggest win of the season and conserving their unbeaten record at home.

An effective Kingston side created few chances in the first half but still managed to score on three times and looking dangerous on counter attack.

Brunel’s Charlie Daniels wiped out the deficit in the first half after Chendlik’s eighth-minute opener, but Kingston struck back and scored two more to go into the break at 3-1.

The second half started in high tempo with a few decent attempts from Kingston and a couple of chances for the away side, but where the visitors failed to deliver throughout the half, Kingston took their chances with a flurry of late goals.

Monrose and AL-Haddad came on in the second half to replace Chendlik and Wiredu, and the substitutes helped to increase Kingston’s score.

The fourth goal for Kingston was Hammett’s fourth assist. He dribbled through the defence and the ball deflected off the goalkeeper to offer Monrose an easy job to put it away.

In the 88th minute Terry Mireku was through on his left wing and with a beautifully struck cross he found Al-Haddad on the far post who headed it home for Kingston’s fifth.

In stoppage time Al-Haddad got his second and finished off the score galore with goal number six for the home side. Monrose was alone with the goalkeeper who saved his effort, Al-Haddad was cleverly positioned and the ball dropped in his feet for him to seal the final score.
