The Betting Zoo: Week Nine

With the Aintree Grand National and the return of a certain Tiger Woods to the golfing fairways of Augusta, this is a huge weekend of sport. Almost all bookies are offering free online sign up bonuses to bet on both events - so it is well worth snapping up a free £25 bet. There's also the small matter of two FA Cup semi-finals.

In recognition of this enthralling weekend of sport we've changed the system - each tipster will have £40 to stake - and a free £25 sign up bonus bet on the Grand National. Let us know who your horse is this Saturday in our comment box at the bottom of the page.

The Aintree Grand National (Saturday 10 April, 4.15pm)

£25 sign up bonus on Arbor Supreme to win at 18-1 (Weight 10-8, Age 8)

Never run the National course before but after a successful 2008, this Irish handicapper is fancied by some. With victories on both good and soft ground, Arbor Supreme should have the stamina to compete with the best.

£5 e/w (£10 total) on Tricky Trickster at 16-1 (Weight 11-4, Age 7)

Tricky Trickster is the youngest entry into the 2010 National. With that in mind, fatigue will certainly not be a problem. However, inexperience and youth might be. In any case, a little money each way seems like a decent bet for a lively contender.

£3 e/w (£6 total) on Hello Bud at 50-1 (Weight 10-6, Age 12)

I’ll be honest; I was drawn to this horse by the name. But perhaps that’s the best way to make a selection in what is essentially a horse lottery.  Hello Bud has completed the course and has proven stamina over this distance. He’s an outsider but one I will certainly be putting a bit of pocket money on.

£2 e/w (£4 total) on Priests Leap at 100-1 (Weight 11-0, Age 10)

I’ve taken a leap of faith with this selection but with God on his side, this horse could have a chance. Victory is probably beyond him but amidst the chaos of horses falling at every jump who knows, he could just sneak into a top four finish.

Wolves v Stoke City (Premier League, Saturday 10 April, 3.00pm)

£10 on Wolves to win at 13-10

Wolves are enjoying a terrific little spell of late, with just one defeat in their last five games. Wins at relegation rivals Burnley and West Ham have given Mick McCarthy’s side some breathing space above the drop zone. Stoke are never easy opponents and will make life difficult for the home side but ensconced in mid-table they have less riding on this game than Wolves.

The US Masters (Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 April)

£10 on Paul Casey to win at 25-1

With all eyes on the returning Tiger Woods, the bookies favourite at 4-1, this is the perfect event for someone out of the spotlight to take the trophy. Paul Casey is in great form and has the all-round game to finish high on the leaderboard. The Masters is probably his best chance of winning a major and this is a great opportunity for him.

Running total: Up £80.83

Phil -

The Aintree Grand National (Saturday 10 April, 4.15pm)

£25 sign up bonus on Snowy Morning to win at 18-1 (Weight 10-13, Age 10)

Snowy Morning has decent stamina and should make it round the course, as he did in 2008 and 2009, finishing second and ninth respectively. Better weight this year should help, and is a decent free £25 punt to win outright.

£7 e/w (£14 total) on Comply or Die 20-1 (Weight 11-5, Age 11)

Comply or Die has proven himself able to handle the course at Aintree, winning in 2008 and coming second in 2009. No reason to think he won’t be right up there again.

£1 e/w (£2 total) on Can’t Buy Time 33-1 (Weight 10-13, Age 8)

Tony McCoy had a choice between this horse and Don’t Push It for this year’s National, and he went with Don’t Push It. Despite a glittering career McCoy has never won the National, and that is as good a reason as any to back Can’t Buy Time to make him look a fool.

£1 e/w (£2 total) on King John’s Castle 40-1 (Weight 10-9, Age 11)

King John’s Castle is a real outsider, despite coming second in the 2008 Grand National he has only run five times since. There is a chance he could enjoy the return to this course and surprise everyone.

£1 e/w (£2 total) on Ellerslie George at 100-1 (Weight 10-10, Age 10)

Ellerslie George is another outsider and there are question marks over whether he can make it round the course, but he fits all of the trends for previous national winners so there is good value here.

Crystal Palace v QPR (Championship, Saturday 10 April, 3.00pm)

£10 on Crystal Palace to beat QPR - 13/10

Neil Warnock left Crystal Palace at the beginning of March to take the reins at QPR, but after a brief improve in their form QPR have not won in seven games, and lost 4-0 to Leicester last time out. Crystal Palace have taken 7 points from their last three games, and are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the Championship. This is the players’ chance to show Warnock he made a mistake in leaving Palace, and move above QPR in the table.

The US Masters (Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 April)

£5 e/w (£10 total) on Charl Schwartzel at 50-1

Schwartzel is a young South African making his debut at Augusta, however he is in superb form. With the favourite Tiger Woods unlikely to win on his return to golf it makes 50-1 seem very generous on this outsider to be the first debutant to wear the Green Jacket since 1979.

Running total: Down £43.65
