Kingston University Firsts Impress in a Commanding Performance

Kingston University first team look to have turned a corner this week with an impressive 5-2 victory, which is hoped will kick start their season.

So far the problem has not been playing good football or dominating games it has been turning this dominance into victories. A well deserved victory against London Metropolitan University had so far been overshadowed by three narrow defeats.

Last Wednesday, however, brought the arrival of University College London and also a change of fortune. Captain Mike McKenna led by example in an impressive team performance that saw him net the decisive three goals.

McKenna said after the game: “I’m really pleased with the result we look to have finally started to turn our attractive free flowing football into goals. We're a match for anyone when we play like that.”

The game started in the best possible way for Kingston when McKenna slotted home following an incisive break down the left by Laith Aldoori. The lead did not last long into the second half though as parity was restored after some sloppy Kingston defending.

This is when Kingston showed their resilience and instead of capitulating they showed a fighting spirit. It wasn’t long until a chance forged by substitute Paul Day found its way to McKenna who beat the defence with a clever dummy and fired home his second of the day.

This goal galvanised the team and it was only a matter of minutes till Clark Gardner made the lead safer following an intricate one two with Michael Akah. Continued pressure from Aldoori and Arnold Okiror down the left brought Kingston their fourth of the day and McKenna his hat-trick.

Paul Day secured the resounding victory with a powerful header late in the game before a consolation goal for UCL made it 5-2. This victory leaves Kingston third in South Eastern Conference 3B.
