Many KU Students Left Unrepresented In The Union
Post graduate, part time and disabled students are not represented in Kingston's Student Union, after no candidates stepped forward at a recent election.
This could leave them without a voice to lobby the university about issues affecting them such as the post graduate canteen overcharging students, or disabled access across the campus.
KUSU tried to hold elections for student officers in October but had to cancel them as not enough students nominated themselves. To represent a student group you have to be a member of that group. No part time, post grad or disabled students applied, and as a result they have no student officer.
Students not putting themselves forward is a persistent problem and Mark Horne, from KUSU, said: "In nine years we have never had a complete executive!"
Student Officers represent students' concerns on a variety of issues. They can liaise between the students and the university and help suport students when they face difficulties.
Mr. Horne replied: "We have to focus on how being an officer benefits students, but also benefits an individual post holder."
KUSU are looking for people to fill the remaining posts. If you are interested in becoming a student officer for either postgraduates, part time or disabled students then get in touch with KUSU.
