Kingston Music Roundup: Autumn 09

To perk up the days as they get darker, damper and colder, here’s a little pic-n-mix of some of the best live acts and dj sets coming to Kingston soon. It’s certainly a mixed bag, but it’s nice to keep your ears alert.

The Autumn/Winter 09 River Online playlist kicks off with the warming classic Girl from Mars by Ash, who played a sold-out show at The Peel on 2nd November.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are a new electro-pop outfit who hail from Camden, despite the Encore Tricolore name. On bonfire night they played New Slang, Kingston’s biggest indie night, held at McCluskys and run by the city’s own Banquet Records. If you like bittersweet synth-pop from the likes of MGMT and Passion Pit, you might well like their single Dance the Way I Feel.

On Saturday November 7 Fabric regulars Filthy Dukes will be dj-ing at The Hippodrome and are bound to drop Messages and This Rhythm from their album Nonsense in The Dark. Kingston may offer a lot of cheesy clubbing, but if you’d rather a wintry slice of grimey dubstep The Hippodrome boasts Nero on November 14. His remix of The Streets’ Blinded by the Lights shows just how special a dubstep rework can be.

Mystery Jets

Juliette Lewis will be playing The Peel with her band The Licks on November 29. A Hollywood actress who counts Brad Pitt amongst her exes, the generally all-round overachieving rock goddess will also be doing a signing at Banquet Records from 5pm on the night. You’re Speaking My Language hails from her debut album.

Next up are two tracks from the Erol Alkan-produced Mystery Jets album Twenty One. The band, who used to hold the infamous Eel Pie Island parties in West London, are playing D.A.N.C.E at The Hippodrome on 5th December. On the same night, Repeater at McCluskys serves up retro d‘n’b from Roni Size, whose 1997 Mercury winning album features our final track Brown Paper Bag.
