The Bare Basics
An artist walked into the Stanley Picker Gallery on Tuesday completely naked and is now relying on gifts from visitors.
Ansuman Biswas, a London-based live artist, is using the project to explore our concept of ‘giving’ and our relationships with each other by providing a space in which to reflect on our contribution to the world.
However he said he had not realised that nudity would be such a big deal for other people. He said: “I am letting go of anything that I held onto, my vanity included.”
As well as usefull gifts, such as clothes, blankets, a heater and water which Mr Biswas was grateful for, he has been given some bizzarre gifts such as balloons, paints and Famous Grouse Whiskey .
Mr Biswas said quite a few students had been interested in the project. He said one student suggested that he would bring him a packet of pink wafers to live off for the week and says: “Like a lot of people he thought it was joke but having talked to the student for a while he understood and said he would bring something more useful.”
He hopes to redistribute all the gifts he receives during the finale on Saturday.
Mr Biswas's project, called 'Present' is the fourth of the gallery's seven week series of Live Art residencies called 'Louder Than Bombs' looking at current issues.
