Review: Contrary to Popular Thinking
You may have spotted the 3D posters hanging up around Knights Park Campus last week as postgraduate art students took over the 3D space to share what they have been working on this term.
The exhibition, Contrary to Popular Thinking, was a collaboration from over 20 masters students studying fine art, art and space and European art who each had a word to base their project on as well as working within a broader theme of the market.
All the artwork featured cardboard boxes donated by local shops in their work everything was in a different place each day to create a unique experience for visitors.
There was a wide range pieces at the exhibition including large scale artworks such as a giant origami model suspended from the ceiling, a see saw and a cardboard house as well as more discrete thought provoking pieces that manipulated light and shadows.
Symeon Pitsillides started making little origami shapes after watching a Youtube video and says: “It is fun but it became a bit of an obsession, I’ve connected it to last terms project by wearing them as well!”
Visitors may not have realised when they entered the room that they were also taking part in Anastasia Zwi-Souliotou’s project, she had constructed two large tubes inspired by the London Underground and was filming how people reacted to the space.
There was a good range of different styles on display as each artist had interpreted their brief in a unique way but this did mean that sometimes the overriding theme of the market was not obvious. There was plenty for visitors to see, do and get involved with – it’s just a shame that it was only open during reading week when many students were away!
