How to beat the credit crunch: Cheap Chic  Send to a friend

How to look good for only £10 during the credit crunch!

Between the looming recession and the credit crunch, tight budgets for students are about to squeeze even further. So RiverOnline gave me the mission of finding a whole outfit for a £10, for both a male and female student in the second of our 'beat the credit crunch' series. Just call me the Gok Wan of Kingston, because Yes! I did it!

A survey of 30 Kingston students revealed that the majority will now cut back on clothes spending when the purse strings get tighter with most preferring to save their money for other activities. The average spending trends on clothes were £30 a week for women and £100 a month for men, the men preferring not to shop so frequently.  However it is still easy to shop cheaply if you follow this quick Kingston guide of where to look.

I began my quest at the Kingston Primark, a glimmer of hope for money conscious ‘fashionistas’ with its fast fashion at affordable prices. It is the only commercial shop on the high street where you will find ultra low prices. Primark make their money through sheer volumes of sales and tight manufacturing margins and are currently flourishing in this turbulent time. Their lower end of the market costs have drawn an influx of people still wanting fashionable clothing but without the prices they paid before. Men’s clothes are particularly cheap and £10 will get you far.

Next on the list was the shopping gems of a good cause, the array of charity shops in Kingston such as; Oxfam, Princess Alice Hospice, British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK to name a few. Relying on clothes donations from the public, they provide a lucky dip of vintage, one off clothing. Rummage around and you are likely to find a cheap bargain whilst your money will go further and be used to help others.

Lastly there are a few smaller boutiques on Kingston high street that sell cheaper jewellery and accessories to refresh any outfit.

That’s it...very quick and easy to stretch your £10, look good and put your money towards a charity of your choice.  Bargains are still out there so get hunting! £10’s looking good in Kingston

Gorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble.  He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes.  However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.
