It’s that time of year again, V-day, and love it or loathe it we at RiverOnline have compiled a list of the best (and cheapest) places to indulge in some starry eyed gazing across the table - plus where to go to avoid the drool.

There’s two choices here. Option one is a MIXED STARTER (Prawn Toast, Chicken Sateh, Spring Roll, Fish Cake, Barbecued Pork Ribs), MAIN (Monkfish in Thai Herbs, Duck with Cashews and Chilli, Chicken Yellow Curry, Stir-fried Mixed Vegetables, Steamed Jasmine Rice), followed by coffee or Jasmine tea. Option two is a STARTER (Deep-fired Bean Curd, Spring Rolls), MAIN (Bean Curd with Ginger & Mushroom,  Vegetable Green Curry, Stir-fried Rice Noodles with Eggs & Vegetables, Steamed Jasmine Rice), followed by coffee or Jasmine tea.
Price? Option one £23.95 per person / Option two £19.95 per person

Choose one STARTER (Grilled Chicken Sateb, Crispy Breadcrumbed King Prawn, Meatball with Chilli and Tamarind Sauce, Salad with Quail Egg, Cashew Nut and Peanut Dressing, or the veggie Three Mushroom Tom Khar Soup), one MAIN (Roasted Duck Breast with Orange and Tamarind Sauce, Beefsteak Strips with Whisky, Krachai and Peppercorn, or Fillet of Salmon Topped with Creamy Curry Sauce, or veggie options Chunky Tofu with Mushroom and Ginger Sauce, or Stuffed Peppers with Asparagus Curry Mousse). All the mains come with your choice of rice. For DESSERT there’s either Caramelised Coconut Cake Pudding, Chocolate Trifle Torte, or Black Rice and Longan Fruit Pudding.

Here you get a glass of Kir Royale with Amuse Bouche on arrival, which is nice. Then it’s on to the APPETISERS (Lobster Samosa, Shahi Salmon and Lamb chops) and the choice of MAIN (Goan Monk Fish Curry, Chicken Laphroaig Masala, Achaari Bhindi, Dal Makhani, Zeera Aloo, with a choice of Saffron rice, Naan, or Laccha Paratha and Mint and Cucumber Raita). DESSERT comes in the shape of Warm Mulled wine and Fruit of the Forest Pudding accompanied with Malibu Custard Sauce. Vegetarians options are available on request from staff.

STARTER options are (Pieces of breast chicken with cheese, cream, almond, yogurt and light spices or medium spicy Shahi Halim cooked with lentils, wheat and baby lamb on the bone), leading to one MAIN  (Lamb Shank, on the bone cooked with medium spicy sauce, medium spicy Chicken Montaj, breast stuffed with cheese and spinach, a Garlic mushroom Side Dish of half pieces of mushroom cooked with slice of garlic and coriander, or the veggie Chef Special vegetable of steamed vegetable cooked to  an original recipe). Each choice comes with Shahi Pilau Rice (Basmati rice cooked with fried onion), Nan or Peshwari Nan Bread. DESSERT is a healthy Fruit salad.

Menu:
Good old Pizza Hut, or Pasta Hut, or whatever, are offering the most reasonably priced (cheapest) option this V-Day. One Medium Heart Shaped Pizza to share, with two Salad Bowls, and a Sharing Dessert (or one each if you don’t like each other THAT much).

Research grants announced

Kingston University last week received a 5.3% increase in its government grant for research and teaching. The Higher Education Funding Council for England announced that Kingston would receive £73.3m in 2009/10. The average national increase was 4%, while a number of universities, including the London School of Economics, saw their funding reduced.

Kingston student named Microsoft 'Intern of the Year'

A Kingston student won Microsoft’s 'Intern of the Year' award after a process he created was used by the computer giant’s worldwide sales force.  George Avlastimovas, a Business Information Technology student, came up with a new form for staff requesting bonuses while on a placement as part of his course.  He said that the internship gave him “a fantastic opportunity to shape and mould the role to suit my skills.”

Bring your own mug

A money saving scheme has been extended to the Penryhn Road campus. Lecturers and students who bring their own mug to the Picton Room will receive a 5p discount off any hot drink. The scheme, already trialling at Kingston Hill, was introduced in a bid to encourage sustainability and cut back on packaging produced by the university. If successful, it will be extended to all the foodstores.

Cheeky cat in halls

Gorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble.  He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes.  However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.

Honorary degree for leading luvvie

One of the leading lights behind the Rose Theatre received an honorary degree from Kingston University last month in the building he helped to create.Robin Hutchinson, 50, worked for over 25 years to bring the theatre to reality.  The former director of communications and fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind said: “To be recognised by Kingston University was a wonderful honour and to receive it at The Rose was incredibly special.”Click here for more.
