christmas treeHere’s our guide to the week’s TV, events and goings on in and around Kingston...

With a long term coming to an end and Christmas just around the corner, there’s considerable cause for celebration this week.  Here’s our guide to the week’s TV, events and goings on in and around Kingston...

TV:  It’s a little early for TV’s offerings for the feast of Stephen but there is still plenty worth staying in for this week.

Must watch TV this week is The Royal Variety Performance on BBC One at 7.30 pm on Wednesday.  Last year’s performance, of course, is best remembered for Ricky Gervais’s spectacularly bad unscripted stand-up routine, but there’s little chance of a recurrence of that this year.

Laughs should be guaranteed with Jimmy Carr and McIntyre as the royal jesters in residence. There are also performances from Leona Lewis, George Sampson, Take That and Rihanna which should keep music lovers happy.

Film of the week is Die Hard With A Vengeance also on BBC One on Tuesday at 10.35 pm.  For those of you that haven’t seen Die Hard, this is Bruce Willis at his best.

Other highlights include Outnumbered on BBC Two at 10 pm on Wednesday and the intriguing Channel Four documentary Sleepwalkers- Mysteries of the Unconscious Hours at 9 pm on Tuesday. The hour long documentary charts the nocturnal misadventures of some of the country’s worst sufferers.

One man unwittingly persistently pesters his wife for sex while another draws elaborate pictures.   One woman even goes to the length of cooking three course meals in her sleep.  Gripping stuff...

GOING OUT:

1.  If you’re keen for a good night out on the tiles to celebrate the end of term then there’s your usual offering from club land. It’s SKINT at Oceana tonight.  Selected drinks are just £1.60 and entry is free before 8pm.  Expect Christmas songs a plenty on the cheese floor as you party into the wee hours of tomorrow morning.

2.  Alternatively, there’s the imaginatively titled “We love McClusky’s night” at McClusky’s on Wednesday with its usual mix of R & B, hip hop and pop.  Entry is free before 10.30pm and you also get a free shot if you bother going to the effort of dressing in fancy dress.  Cheap drinks are also on offer all night starting at £2.

3.  If live comedy’s what you’re after then get yourself down to the Greyhorse on Friday night for its weekly dose of the Crack Comedy Club.

4. For the more cultured among you there are three events that might grab your interest this week.  Tomorrow lunch time it’s the University’s Carol Service. The service starts at 1.10 pm at Coombehurst Studio on Kingston Hill campus.  For more information please contact Rose on 0208 4172948.

5. Alternatively you can go to the All Saints Church’s Community Carol Service on Tuesday evening.  The service, which includes refreshments, starts at 6.30 pm.

6. If carol singing doesn’t get you into the festive cheer then why not head down to the Rose Theatre and watch its version of Dickens classic A Christmas Carol?  There are matinee performances on Wednesday and Thursday at 2.30 pm.  Evening performances are at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

There are no performances today however- bah humbug!  Tickets range from £7 to £29.50 although there is a 25% discount for students.  For more information, contact the Rose Theatre Ticket hotline on 0871 2301552.

7. AFC Wimbledon play host to Newport Town AFC at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.  The match should be a decent one as both sides are in good form and the Dons are currently sitting in fourth place in the table.  Tickets are at the very reasonable price of £10 with your student card.  Well worth a look if you’ve never been before.

Other Events

1. Just one other event for you to consider this Yuletide and that’s the German market in Market Place.  Open every day until 8pm the market offers mulled wine, hot dogs, traditional German food and THE pick and mix that surely put Woolworths out of business!  A great spot to take a break after a spot of Christmas shopping that’s always busy...

The Higher Education Funding Council for England announced that Kingston would receive £73.3m in 2009/10. The average national increase was 4%, while a number of universities, including the London School of Economics, saw their funding reduced.

Kingston student named Microsoft 'Intern of the Year'

A Kingston student won Microsoft’s 'Intern of the Year' award after a process he created was used by the computer giant’s worldwide sales force.  George Avlastimovas, a Business Information Technology student, came up with a new form for staff requesting bonuses while on a placement as part of his course.  He said that the internship gave him “a fantastic opportunity to shape and mould the role to suit my skills.”

Bring your own mug

A money saving scheme has been extended to the Penryhn Road campus. Lecturers and students who bring their own mug to the Picton Room will receive a 5p discount off any hot drink. The scheme, already trialling at Kingston Hill, was introduced in a bid to encourage sustainability and cut back on packaging produced by the university. If successful, it will be extended to all the foodstores.

Cheeky cat in halls

Gorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble.  He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes.  However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.
