The Mill - Proud owner of the cheapest pint in town and famous for their legendary gourmet burgers, let's see what this student hangout has to offerWhere is it? The Mill is situated on the High Street, opposite Nando's and literally 10 minutes walk from Penrhyn Road or the town centre: Google Maps Features & Facilities The Mill caters for all your chill-out needs. On two floors there are two pool tables and three plasma screens, showing mainly music videos but also selected TV programmes and of course the football!! There is a huge selection of game machines, including two fruit machines, two Monopoly and Pub Cricket quiz machines, a shoot 'em up machine and a 'Stacker' arcade machine where the prizes on offer include a digital camera, Nintendo DS and a state-of-the-art mobile phone. Additional Information: Unfortunately there is no sheltered smoking area, so it's a stroll outside to the front of the pub. There is a cash machine, but there is a charge of £1.50 per withdrawal. The bar accepts card payments but the minimum charge is £5. NB: Take out cash before you enter the Mill!
Rating: (3/5) Food & Drink Definitely the best grub at the Mill is their famous gourmet burgers. Choose from the 'Chilli', the 'Swiss' burger with Emmental cheese, the 'New Yorker', the 'Rib Eye Steak' or the legendary 'Scream' and 'Scream Deluxe' – with two 8oz prime Irish burgers, bacon, onion rings and BBQ sauce. For a quick snack their Cajun onion rings and curly fries really hit the spot, however lately they have been out of curly fries – a huge disappointment. For those with a sweet-tooth (or if you're just feeling a little bit naughty!), The Mill has a impressive range of delicious puddings to choose from, including chocolate brownie cakes, waffles and ice-cream and the chocolate-lovers dream, the white chocolate fondue platter – definitely enough to share! Drinks-wise, the Mill offers a good selection with an impressive cocktail menu including full and mini cocktails with all the classics such as piña colada, sex on the beach and woo woos. On tap, there is of course the cheapest pint, Carlsberg, as well as a good choice of lagers and ales including Fruilli, a sweet, strawberry beer. A Ruby Ruby is also a good refreshing drink – Bulmers, port and lots of ice, lovely!
Rating: (4/5) Service Table service is usually quick however we did have to wait a very long time to get served at the bar. The Mill is a regular hang-out for me and my journalism course mates; however on numerous occasions when the bar has been quite empty bar service has been slow. Most of the bar-staff are very friendly and will have a good chat with you, which helps to set the welcoming and chilled out atmosphere of the Mill. Very often however a lot of the pumps are off which is frustrating so you must be adaptable with your drink choice!
Rating: (2/5) Atmosphere The Mill is very relaxed during the day into the early evening – a perfect place to chill out after lectures. My friends and I are regulars and love nothing better than sinking into their comfy sofas whilst enjoying a cool and refreshing drink at the end of a hard week. The mood becomes livelier around 8pm and the pub gets quite busy. A selection of good music is played including rock, indie and chart tracks and The Mill provides a good night out, usually forming the pre-club entertainment for many students.
Rating: (4/5) Themes The Mill puts on a range of student-focussed themed nights. Monday nights from 7pm are ‘Quids night’ when beers are just £1. Wednesdays are the student nights which are always really popular. Thursday is cocktail night and there are also weekly pole dancing lessons that take place upstairs. Sunday night is comedy night run by students - there are rumours that Frank Skinner and Alan Carr may be performing in the near future, watch this space we'll keep you updated. For more information on the comedy nights, check out: http://www.yeardot.co.uk/whoweare-4/simon-jenkins.html.
Rating: (3/5) Price
Cocktail pitchers are priced at £8.95 – pretty cheap compared with most other pubs. Food is reasonable too, beer and burger combos are £3.75 – excellent value for money for a satisfying pub lunch. If you just fancy a snack to accompany your drinks, Cajun onion rings are only £1.25 and curly fries or shoestring fries are just £1.75 – not bad at all. It would definitely be hard to beat The Mill on price, without a doubt one of its best features.
Rating: (5/5)
Overall Impression: The Mill is excellent value for money for a satisfying gourmet burger, a cheap pint or a good night out with a wide range of cocktails and shorts to choose from.
Best for: Chilling out with mates after lectures, getting some grub or having a cheap night out.
Worst for: watching the footie – the screens are too small and badly placed so it’s difficult to see the action. The bar also gets too crowded during match times and it's impossible to get served. As The Mill usually has a chilled out vibe, the tension that comes with watching the football creates a very strange atmosphere that doesn't really work Overall Rating: (4/5)

| Bring your own mugA money saving scheme has been extended to the Penryhn Road campus. Lecturers and students who bring their own mug to the Picton Room will receive a 5p discount off any hot drink. The scheme, already trialling at Kingston Hill, was introduced in a bid to encourage sustainability and cut back on packaging produced by the university. If successful, it will be extended to all the foodstores. |
| Cheeky cat in hallsGorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble. He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes. However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed. |
