The Spring Grove: what has it got to offer?  Send to a friend

spring grove

Andy Jackson rates the services of the Spring Grove pub.

The Spring Grove is situated on Bloomfield Road just a couple of minutes walk from campus on Penrhyn Road.

FEATURES & FACILITIES:

The Grove has a little something for everyone.  For sport fans it boasts three plasma screens that show both setanta and skysports while Quiz enthusiasts will appreciate the itbox.  There’s a jukebox with a decent selection for music officiandos, a dart board and a whole host of board games from trivial pursuit to chess.  The giant Jenga set is also noteworthy and proved popular whilst we were there.  It did however lack a pool table.

Additional info: There is a covered, heated smoking area and a large beer garden and patio area to the rear of the pub.  It also accepts debit cards and there is no minimum purchase amount.
Rating: 3.5/5

FOOD & DRINK
The pub serves your standard selection of pub grub from sausage and mash to fish and chips.  It has a daily specials menu and serves a traditional Sunday roast between 12 and 3pm.
For those seeking something a little lighter it does a whole host of rolls, sandwiches and paninis as well as garlic bread and portions of chips.  One criticism of the food selection would be its lack of choice for vegetarians- the Caesar salad and homemade soup are the only vegetarian options on the menu bar a bowl of chips.  Food is served daily from 12-2.30pm and from 6-9pm.

Its drinks range is impressive.  It has 10 beers on tap including Fosters, Fosters Super Chilled (well you wouldn’t want a warm beer would you?), Guinness and Strongbow.  It also serves Peroni.  As a Youngs pub however its prize asset is its selection ales on offer.  There is also a substantial number of wines on offer.
Rating: 4/5

PRICE
The Grove is not student friendly in this respect.  A pint of Fosters will set you back £3.20 while crisps are 70p a go.  Stick to the Youngs Ales if you’re on a budget.
The food is also fairly pricey.  My roast was £8.50 while Laura’s club sandwich was £4.  However the food was excellent and the portions were very generous.  The chips and garlic bread represent decent value choices at £1.75.
Rating: 2.5/5

BARSTAFF/SERVICE
The bar staff were all very friendly and helpful but were quite slow on serving.  It was busy whilst we were in there but we had to wait 10 minutes before we got served on one occasion.  On the flipside the food was very quick to arrive.
Rating 2.5/5

ATMOSPHERE
The pub has a happy ambience.  By no means raucous (even when the football was on), the Grove is an excellent place to catch up with friends over a quiet pint or wile away a Sunday afternoon.  However, it certainly isn’t somewhere you’d come to before heading out to a club or a venue for a big night out.  The Grove is also a regular drinking hole of many of the lecturers which could very quickly change the atmosphere- certainly if you’re supposed to be in lectures at the time!
Rating: 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION
The Spring Grove has some great features, however its prices are prohibitive.  The prospect of bumping into your university lecturer also doesn’t add to its appeal.

GOOD FOR: A chilled out pint, giant Jenga
BAD FOR: A cheap night out
Overall Rating: 3/5

The Spring Grove is the first pub to be reviewed.  We hope to review as many pubs as possible over the course of the year.  Got a particular pub you want us to review?

The Higher Education Funding Council for England announced that Kingston would receive £73.3m in 2009/10. The average national increase was 4%, while a number of universities, including the London School of Economics, saw their funding reduced.

A Kingston student won Microsoft’s 'Intern of the Year' award after a process he created was used by the computer giant’s worldwide sales force.  George Avlastimovas, a Business Information Technology student, came up with a new form for staff requesting bonuses while on a placement as part of his course.  He said that the internship gave him “a fantastic opportunity to shape and mould the role to suit my skills.”

Bring your own mug

A money saving scheme has been extended to the Penryhn Road campus. Lecturers and students who bring their own mug to the Picton Room will receive a 5p discount off any hot drink. The scheme, already trialling at Kingston Hill, was introduced in a bid to encourage sustainability and cut back on packaging produced by the university. If successful, it will be extended to all the foodstores.

Cheeky cat in halls

Gorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble.  He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes.  However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.
