Thousands of people in Kingston and in hundreds of cities worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour tonight to demand action for climate change.
Kingston MPs Edward Davey and Susan Kramer have both ‘signed up to switch off’ for WWF’s ‘Earth Hour 2009’ at 8.30pm. Mr Davey said: “I will be at home tonight, switching off all my lights and electrical appliances, contributing a very small part in an event I hope the rest of the world will contribute in.” The event‘s aim is to influence the decision of world politicians who will meet in Copenhagen in December 2009 to adopt a ‘global deal’ over how the world will defend itself against the growing climate threat. Nick Deere, Kingston Coordinator for Friends of the Earth, said: “Climate change is undeniable. People may always pick on certain scientific facts, irrespective of that, if you think chopping down part of the Amazon for a tub of margarine is okay, I would tend to disagree.” As well as taking part in Earth Hour, Mr Deere suggests Kingston inhabitants should cut down on car usage, short-haul flights and save energy as much you can. He suggests using local stores and markets as opposed to shopping at supermarkets. Kingston’s main consumptive category is food and drink with alcohol purchased in pubs and restaurants making up the highest contribution along with take-away and food and drink purchased for home consumption. James, Deputy Manager of ‘The Ram’ pub, said: “We’ll take part. We’re part of a big chain – Spear Group – someone came in a couple of months ago and changed all the light bulbs so they were energy-saving. All our lights and outdoor heaters are now on timers. London Mayor Boris Johnson has said that the capital’s iconic landmarks, including the London Eye and Nelson’s Column, will dim their lights. He has already promised to make London “a world leader in climate change”. Mr Davey added: “In Kingston we’ve got to take action now regardless of whether we’re in a recession or not, global warming is too much of an issue.”
