Students were left bemused after Little Miss Giggles spent a day at Kingston University to raise money for Comic Relief.
Journalism MA student Andy Jackson donned the 1.5m diameter, two kilogram blue foam costume for lectures, seminars and lunch to raise £100 for Comic Relief.
The student, who plans to run the London Marathon as the character next month, said: “I thought it would be a good idea to shake the tin and raise money for Comic Relief. “I walked to university as Little Miss Giggles today, and it took me nearly an hour because I had to talk to so many people. One old lady said ‘Did you look in the mirror this morning?’, and a little girl was upset when she saw a man inside a woman’s costume,” he added. The student said the day helped him prepare for 26 mile road race, and made him aware of some “structural changes” that needed to be made to the costume. In particular, the runner planned to add straps to prevent the giant foam ball slipping up and down and restricting his field of vision. Mr Jackson said: “I am running for Children with Leukaemia because I had leukaemia myself. I ran the London Marathon once before as Mr Bump. It was really difficult.” The student was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in 2003, and has led a normal life since receiving a bone marrow transplant in May 2004. The marathon attempt is part of his efforts to raise £250,000, the estimated cost of his treatment, for the charity.
