Veral Desai, running for President, aims to:

* Bring to the post a sense of visibility and professionalism that would promote student culture.
* Host more events with the backing of the SU that will not only improve communication but make KU students feel more involved with their University.

 


Hassan Dende-Raji, running for President, is campaigning to:

* Encourage student value within the University hierarchy.
* Introduce a 24-hour library system in Roehampton Vale and Knights Park campus’. 
* Lobby against studio fees in Knights Park.
* Create a better quality of food and more variety of option including ‘halal option’.
* Encourage a greener environment.

 


If you vote for Iain Alembick, running for VP Communications and Campaigns, he says he will:

* Voice your concerns to KU management to bring change and enhance you experience.
* Raise the profile of KU, ensuring employers want to recruit here.
* Create unity across all 4 campuses by having a KU Carnival.
* Create more representation of the SU at each campus.
* Campaign for: greener Uni, more quiet space and adequate smoking facilities.

 


Hassan Barakat, running for VP Communications and Campaigns plans to:

* Make the Student Union a more engaging place for Kingston students in 2009.
* His open minded attitude and cultured background will be crucial assets to the Union.
* He enjoys problem solving and wants to see the Union become a better place in 2009!

 

 

Rhiannon Hiscocks, running for VP Activities, aims to:

* Introduce sports and societies weeks to the University; raising the profile of each club.
* Have regular union representation on each campus, giving students the opportunity to sign up to clubs throughout the year and not just in Freshers Fair.
* Keep the KUSU website up-to-date with every activity, so that students will be able to check exactly what is happening on any date throughout the year and easily access details about each sports/societies event.

JJ Zaida, running for VP Activities intends to:

* Introduce a speaker’s corner to promote freedom of speech and encourage students to stand up, speak and debate on issues they feel passionate about.
* Make the SU more politically active by organising protests on issues such as tuition fees, imperialism and the erosion of our civil liberties.
* Introduce a Halal option in the cantine.

Senay “Lil” Avey, running for LGBT Officer says:

* I know that LGBT students need a voice of their own as they have a very specialised set of problems that not everyone will understand.
* Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, regardless of whether you are an LGBT student or not.

Type in ‘Lil Avey’ into the ‘Find Names – Web Dialog Box’ of your student email account if you want to ask Lil any questions.

 


Paul Rowell, running for Non-Portfolio Officer, wants to:

* Represent, what he thinks is, a largely unknown part of the University, placements.
*  Make more information available for current and future placement students, as well as increasing the support available for students.

 

 

Robin Bachor, running for International Officer, says:

* After term 1 of being the international student officer I decided to re-run and take an active role within the union again.
* The most important thing for me is to establish an effective communication with the international students and to help them out at any stage of their studies.
* Working with other officers and representing you is what I value the most.

Research grants announced

Kingston University last week received a 5.3% increase in its government grant for research and teaching. The Higher Education Funding Council for England announced that Kingston would receive £73.3m in 2009/10. The average national increase was 4%, while a number of universities, including the London School of Economics, saw their funding reduced.

Kingston student named Microsoft 'Intern of the Year'

A Kingston student won Microsoft’s 'Intern of the Year' award after a process he created was used by the computer giant’s worldwide sales force.  George Avlastimovas, a Business Information Technology student, came up with a new form for staff requesting bonuses while on a placement as part of his course.  He said that the internship gave him “a fantastic opportunity to shape and mould the role to suit my skills.”

Bring your own mug

A money saving scheme has been extended to the Penryhn Road campus. Lecturers and students who bring their own mug to the Picton Room will receive a 5p discount off any hot drink. The scheme, already trialling at Kingston Hill, was introduced in a bid to encourage sustainability and cut back on packaging produced by the university. If successful, it will be extended to all the foodstores.

Cheeky cat in halls

Gorgeous George the cat is much loved and petted by the residents and staff at Middle Mill Halls, but, his cheeky antics have got him into trouble.  He can often be found pacing the car park meowing at passers by, lounging in reception or nipping into halls for extra strokes.  However, halls management are now concerned that this felicitous feline is breaching the licence and have put up a sign asking students to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.

Honorary degree for leading luvvie

One of the leading lights behind the Rose Theatre received an honorary degree from Kingston University last month in the building he helped to create.Robin Hutchinson, 50, worked for over 25 years to bring the theatre to reality.  The former director of communications and fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind said: “To be recognised by Kingston University was a wonderful honour and to receive it at The Rose was incredibly special.”Click here for more.
