Gorgeous George, a loved and petted cat at Middle Mill Halls, has been banned from the halls of residence for his cheeky antics.
He can often be found roaming the car park meowing for attention or lounging in reception. But, halls management have now cracked down on George’s escapades, fearing he may breach the licence by entering student accommodation. They have put up signs in the halls warning students they need to prevent him sneaking into bedrooms and becoming overfed.
Jane Jones, Halls Assistant at the halls on Portland Road, Kingston said the four year old brown tabby has been visiting the staff for at least a year. She said: “The owners used to come and take him home, but every time they did, he would reappear.”
Li-Chun Hu, 23, a resident studying an MA in arts market appraisal said that before the sign banning George was put up: “We used to find him in the hall way. When it’s cold I think people felt sorry for him.” The owners, who are believed to live on Portland Road, Kingston, have two other cats and Ms Jones thinks there could be a clash of personalities in the household. She added: “The owners haven’t disowned him, but, they know he’s being looked after. They work all day and George likes being around people.” However, she warned: “He sneaks in through open windows and doors which is a breach of the licence.” Kingston University accommodation department issue the licence which is upheld by the halls of residence management. The licence forbids any pets or animals to be allowed within the student accommodation because of health and safety considerations. Additionally, animals have no means of exiting the premises once inside and could become trapped. Ms Jones added: “The students should throw him out”, but admits most people find it is hard to resists George’s charms. The residents of Middle Mill Halls are equally fond of George, although there seems to be some confusion about his sex. Ms Hu added: “When I first came here the rumour was George is a girl. Once I checked. He’s a boy!” Brook Su, 31, an MA design student said: “He’s funny, not shy, loves to play with people. I think he’s a girl though?!” But, not everyone is so keen on George, Ms Su added: “Once she jumped in through a window from the back yard and made the girl scream because she is scared of cats.” Ms Jones said: “Only one student complained because she suffered with asthma.”
There is even a group on Facebook dedicated to George requesting that he be made an honourary student.
