It is not often that Kingston is graced with the presence of such high profiled bands, but it was the town’s lucky night when Fightstar came out to play. With the infamous ex-Busted guitarist Charlie Simpson at its helm, they were out to promote new single The English Way. Though originally intended to be held at Banquet Records on Eden Street, popularity forced a change of venue to McCluskys. Fightstar appeared on stage just after 5:30 pm, introduced themselves and blasted out their first song, Grand Unification Part 1.
Guitarist and second vocalist Alex Westaway and bassist Dan Haigh powered through the songs, as Charlie encouraged the crowd to jump around. Though Omar Abidi was absent as drummer, due to an injury, the band did not lose their spirit. Their second song, Paint your target, was chosen by the audience as there was no set list. The third song was a choice between Palahniuk’s Laughter and Deathcar, with the audience settling on the latter. The fourth song, Colours Bleed, a B side track was received well, but it was nothing compared to the roar of approval when final song, The English Way, was played. Some hard core fans formed a circle pit, whilst others clapped or sang along, but everyone was involved. Talking to fans after the show, it was obvious that they had been impressed, albeit for different reasons. Reece Simmons, 17, a fan of the band for three years said that despite the small show, it was still “pretty hectic.” Sarah Brown, 13 and three similarly aged friends, came for one reason alone, “we love Charlie” they chorused. And despite other fans joking that Fightstar “sound like Busted but with screaming,” it was clear that the band had left a lasting impression on those who came to the show.
